Exfoliate yourself

Back Exfoliator

Now is the perfect time to focus on self-care and find little ways to treat yourself on a weekly basis. Exfoliating is the first step of your beauty routine that can be quick, fun and easy with the right products! Why exfoliate?  As we age, our body does not shed dead skin cells as quickly as when we were younger, causing our skin to appear dull, dehydrated and sometimes flaky.

Exfoliation is by far, my favorite part of my beauty routine! Nothing feels better than freshly exfoliated and moisturized skin! And don’t forget to give those lips some attention!

Sugaring and waxing provides exfoliation benefits too, so do not exfoliate 24-hours before or after a hair removal appointment.  Cough, cough- book your sugar and/ or waxing appointment today!

There are two types of exfoliation.  Chemical and mechanical- both are great in different ways, so you can pick your favorite and stick with it or mix it up! If you are one of the “lucky” ones with sensitive skin or severe acne, consider speaking with a professional (like us!) before choosing an exfoliant. There are many beauty Youtubers out there that promote over exfoliation with chemical and mechanical exfoliants because they believe it improves their skin texture and controls breakouts.  This can cause dehydration, premature aging, and acne so defiantly consult a professional before adding too much to your routine. What works for others might not be what is best for your skin. Daily exfoliation or exfoliating over a sunburn, and peeling away dead skin after a chemical peel are a no go.

Chemical exfoliation includes products containing alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, citric, tartaric, malic) or beta hydroxy acids (salicylic) such as creams, serums, facial cleansers or getting a professional chemical peel treatment. The acids break down the bonds between the cells in the epidermis (top layer of the skin), leaving your skin brighter, smoother + improving the absorption of finishing products. Our top selling product, sexApeel is a great chemical exfoliant you can use on your face and body.  If you are unsure what product will work best for you, book a facial with us and we will guide you based on your skin analysis we do before every facial!

Mechanical exfoliants include scrubs, facial cleansing brushes or exfoliating cloths that remove the buildup of dead skin. This kind of exfoliant is a great option if you are not sure how your skin will react because the intensity can be manipulated. Products that contain smaller exfoliation particles like jojoba beads, sugar cane or coffee are gentler, rather than something abrasive like a plastic beads like the infamous devil scrub (yes, I am talking about St. Ives apricot scrub).  Some scrubs can only be used on the body since the skin on your face is so much more sensitive.  Moral of the story, if you are unsure, please go to a pro, not YouTube so the recommendations are your you specifically.

We are always here to answer your exfoliation questions and have both chemical and mechanical options for face and body.  Exfoliation is a huge part of skincare and what will make you look fresh faced on those days where you are not feeling 100%.  We are passionate about skin and empowering our clients and can chat all day about this topic so don’t be shy.  Let us help you find the best option for YOU!  Shop our products at our online shop or swing in to buy in person.
